Dholera town: the original village behind the Special Investment Region

Before it was a smart-city brand, Dholera was a small village on the flat coastal plain beside the Gulf of Khambhat. That village still exists. The name on the maps, the temple, the census record and the salt-satyagraha memory all belong to an actual settlement, not to the master plan. If you only ever read about Dholera as a 920 sq km investment region, you miss the town that sits at its origin.

The original village behind the region

The Dholera Special Investment Region was carved from 22 villages of Dholera taluka in Ahmedabad district, on the western coast of the Gulf of Khambhat. Dholera town is the settlement that lent its name to the whole project. The verified named list of all 22 villages is not reliably sourced, so we cite only the count. What matters for a reader is the scale gap: an old village of a few hundred households now sits inside a planned region measured in hundreds of square kilometres.

Census 2011: a small settlement

The Census 2011 record for Dholera village lists 2,779 people, split as 1,420 males and 1,359 females, across 576 households, with a literacy rate of 80.29 percent. Those are the last hard population numbers we can stand behind for the town itself. Any figure you see about the region's future population, such as the target of up to about 2 million residents by the early 2040s, is a planning target for the whole SIR, not a count of anyone living in the old village today.

The Swaminarayan temple and the port tradition

The most durable piece of Dholera's heritage is its Swaminarayan temple, cited as one of the nine temples built by Swaminarayan himself. That is a well-supported claim. The other frequently repeated line, that Dholera was historically a busy port town, should be read as tradition rather than settled fact. It appears in general references but is not firmly sourced, so we present it as a claim about the town's past, not a confirmed record.

Dholera and the 1930 salt satyagraha

Dholera has a genuine place in the freedom movement. After the Dandi march, a salt-law civil-disobedience action took place at Dholera port in April 1930. Per the Gujarati Vishwakosh, Amritlal Seth led about 21 satyagrahis on 6 April, and Balwantrai Mehta led a larger contingent around 13 April, with Jhaverchand Meghani among those who helped recruit volunteers. This is a documented event, not folklore. We deliberately leave out some of the leadership names that circulate without support, because the history is strong enough without them.
