Wafer
A thin slice of silicon on which chips are fabricated; Dholera's Tata fab is planned to process up to 50,000 wafers a month.
A wafer is a thin, round slice of semiconductor material, usually silicon, on which many integrated circuits, or chips, are fabricated at once before being cut apart. Wafer capacity, measured in wafers per month, is the standard way to describe how large a chip fab is.
In Dholera, wafers are the unit that describes the scale of the Tata-PSMC fab. The plant is planned to process up to 50,000 wafers a month as a 300mm fab, using PSMC technology transfer from Taiwan. Its debut process node is 28nm, within a portfolio spanning 28, 40, 55, 90 and 110 nm mature and specialty nodes, aimed at products such as power-management ICs, display drivers, microcontrollers and high-performance computing logic.
For a buyer, the wafer figure is useful context rather than a direct investment metric. It signals the industrial weight of the anchor drawing suppliers and jobs to the region, which supports Dholera's long-term economic story.
