Approach roads to Anandpur and Buranpur went under water in the same event (confirmed), and across the wider district roughly 10,000 people were affected during that week of rain (reported in the same coverage).
Two facts sit side by side here, and both matter. First, this happened in the SIR's home taluka, which moves the flood question from theoretical to concrete: the Bhal flooded in a strong monsoon, in 2026, with the project well underway. Second, no source reports damage to the SIR's trunk infrastructure, the built roads, canal and services of the Activation Area, in that event. We state both halves exactly because either one alone would mislead.
The flood engineering on the official record
The master plan treats water as a first-order engineering problem rather than a footnote. The state portal lists Canal Front Development, covering land filling, civil, MEP and landscape works, within the SIR's project scope (confirmed as scope; engineering details reported), and storm water drainage is built into the roads-and-services packages. The logic running through these works is consistent: raise the ground people build on, train the rivers past the city, and give the monsoon somewhere engineered to go. That is the standard playbook for building on low coastal plains, and the July 2026 event is an early, partial data point on how it performs: unprotected villages in the taluka flooded, and the engineered core is not reported to have been hit. One monsoon is evidence, not proof, and the works themselves are still part-built.
The desalination plant is a study, not a plant
Water supply and flood management travel together in Dholera coverage, and the 200 MLD seawater desalination plant is the item most often described as if it already exists. It does not. What critics have said
The flood question also has a published critical record, and a reference page should show it rather than bury it. In December 2015, The Wire reported farmers saying the final plots allotted to them under land pooling fall in flood-prone areas (confirmed as a published position). In December 2013, Counterview argued that urbanising the Bhal may worsen flood risk by hardening surfaces and interrupting natural drainage (confirmed as a published position). Both criticisms are a decade old, and we present them as documented positions, not as this site's verdict. They earn their place because they name the two issues, plot-level flood exposure and drainage interruption, that the engineering record above exists to answer, and the honest reading is that the answer is still being built.
What a buyer should actually check
City-level flood debates settle nothing about a specific plot. The Bhal is not uniformly low, schemes are not uniformly drained, and the distance between a serviced plot on a raised platform and raw fringe land near a creek can be the whole answer. Three checks beat any brochure:
- Plot-level elevation: ask for the plot's elevation relative to surrounding land and the nearest drainage line, in writing, not the SIR-wide story.
- TP scheme drainage status: confirm whether the town planning scheme around the plot has built stormwater drainage today, as opposed to drainage drawn on a plan.
- A monsoon-season site visit: see the plot and its approach road between July and September. The July 2026 event showed approach roads can flood even when trunk infrastructure is not reported hit.
